Yikes! Don’t drop your new iPhone 4S!

Posted on

Found this video online, courtesy of SquareTrade, an insurance company (oddly enough!).
In the video at the bottom, they’ve dropped an iPhone 4S and a Samsung Galaxy S2.

This stood out to me because ever since I got my Samsung Galaxy S2, I’ve been afraid of dropping it.
My fear is mostly because the phone is so light and thin that it just doesn’t have that ‘reassuringly solid’ feeling of my older iPhone 3GS. Read the rest of this entry »

Painting Guide: How I do rusted metal

Posted on

I’ve recently been catching up on painting my Orks, while I maintain a stoic discipline of resisting buying more models (Battlewagon! Battlewagon!).

During this time, I’ve been practising some of painting techniques that I’ve gotten a little rusty at (Pun not intended). This time, I’ve been practising a simple method of rusted metal that I thought I’d share for both my own record and for anyone else who might care to see it. Read the rest of this entry »

Why you should learn how to use Windows Resource Monitor

Posted on

As a SysAdmin I find that a lot of my job requires patience. Patience because I often have to teach and tutor less tech-savvy colleagues about how their computer works and how they can make it better work for them. This is often achieved by using shortcuts, favorites, keystrokes and other quick-access ways of doing things hidden all over Windows and Office.

One thing that I find invaluable yet I find others find to be the stuff of ‘IT black magic’ is the use of the task manager and also its even lesser known companion, Windows Resource Monitor.

These are tools that are invaluable to troubleshoot, determine problems, find performance bottlenecks and also to just figure out what the hell is going on. Read the rest of this entry »

Pilgrimage to Games Day 2011

Posted on

This year, I’ve made my first trip to Games Day, an event put on by Games Workshop to celebrate all of their franchises at the NEC in Birmingham. It’s quite a large event, with thousands of people going there to see the latest and greatest that GW have released.

When here, you can buy models (Including Forgeworld and Warhammer Forge models), assemble models, paint, speak to the Games Workshop people who design and make the hobby as well as bring your own armies to play on the epic-sized game boards. Read the rest of this entry »

Goodbye Godaddy!

Ever since I first started this blog, I’ve hosted it on GoDaddy.

At first it wasn’t so bad then as time went on it got slower and slower. This went on for many months and caused a lot of frustration whenever I tried to update my blog. It has come to a head in the last few weeks when I decided enough was enough.

Over the last few months I’ve been running a lot of diagnosis and optimization tools on this humble WordPress site to find out where the hold up was. Read the rest of this entry »

Holy crap Microsoft – Windows 8 fast bootup!

Posted on

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last year, many of you may know that “Windows 8” is on the horizon. I’ve been carefully following the development of the new Microsoft OS and there is something in particular that made me sit up and pay attention about the new release.

“Windows 8” features a new boot up process that is more akin to the current hibernate method of putting your system to sleep, whereby core system runtime is essentially flushed to disk then read back on startup. This apparently dramatically reduces the time for bootup, something everyone I know is always pleased to hear. Read the rest of this entry »

How I love Google’s logo-play

Freddie's 65th Bithday!

Today (As typical of my Monday morning routine) I got up and zombied around at home, came to work somehow navigating the public transport system on autopilot then sat down at my desk and retrieved my laptop from my bag in the kind of smooth motion that comes with long practice.

After booting up and flicking through my morning email while longingly thinking about coffee, I opened Internet Explorer to find the familiar homepage of Google… But it was different, and it usually is. Read the rest of this entry »

What people forget about Google+ and Facebook

Posted on

I’m writing today about an article I read on ZDNet, linked here.
Well, I have to admit, I saw this article and it made me happier than I’ve been in recent memory regarding articles about Google+.

In particular Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO states, quite simply on Google’s site “…people who are concerned about their safety, G+ is completely optional. No one is forcing you to use it. It’s obvious for people at risk if they use their real names, they shouldn’t use G+.”
This statement is in response to Googles recent policy regarding Google+ that requires people to use their real leagal names, not anonymous aliases. Read the rest of this entry »

Samsung Galaxy S 2 – Post Mortem

Posted on

Well I’ve been using my Samsung Galaxy S 2 for about two and a half months now, and I’ve gotten used to using it quite a bit.
There are some good and bad things about this phone handset that I’ve noted and I thought I’d share them with the world.
This is just a quick run-over. Read the rest of this entry »
